Why Bronx Eats?

Bronx Eats makes plant-based eating appealing, accessible, and achievable—through live cooking demos and free, fresh, nutritious produce, all delivered in a dignified, social setting that breaks away from the stigma of traditional food relief. This isn’t a handout—it’s a community-powered movement.

At the heart of Bronx Eats is an innovative, integrated approach that pairs access to fresh, nutritious produce with the skills and confidence to cook it—helping to build lifelong habits while celebrating the Bronx’s vibrant culinary traditions.

Local chefs highlight culturally relevant recipes that reflect and honor the communities we serve.

Our holistic model addresses multiple borough-wide needs at once: food insecurity, food literacy, community-building, and food waste reduction. We work in partnership with schools and local organizations to promote wellness, boost learning, and increase engagement and participation.

Food is more than nourishment—it’s connection, empowerment, and change. Bronx Eats brings people together around the table to build a healthier Bronx.

FAQs

  • We offer some public produce distributions and cooking demos throughout the year that are open to all Bronx residents. These public events are separate from our school-based programs, which are exclusive to the students, families, and staff of those schools.

  • Bronx Eats produce distributions are designed to serve up to 150 families per event, offering a variety of fresh, nutritious fruits and vegetables at no cost. We often pair distributions with cooking demos or recipe cards to help families make the most of what they receive.

  • Each Bronx Eats demo features a live cooking presentation by a professional NYC chef, focused on plant-based dishes using fresh, seasonal, and often locally sourced ingredients. Attendees can watch, ask questions, and taste the finished dish at the end of the demo.

  • All are welcome! Our demos are designed for all skill levels and all ages. Whether you're a beginner or looking for new ideas, our chefs are ready to guide you, answer questions, and demonstrate practical, plant-based recipes you can make at home.

  • We focus on plant-based, vegetarian cooking demos because they support better health outcomes and provide nutritious, accessible options for communities facing food insecurity. In the Bronx, rates of obesity, diabetes, and other diet-related diseases are disproportionately high—while fruit and vegetable intake remains far too low. Bronx Eats promotes the idea of food as medicine, showing how plant-based meals can help prevent and even reverse chronic illness. Our demos highlight that nutritious meals can be simple, affordable, culturally relevant, and delicious—no fancy ingredients or prior cooking experience required.

  • All Bronx Eats programs—cooking demos, tastings, and produce distributions—are completely free. We’re committed to making fresh food and cooking education accessible to everyone—no cost, no barriers, no judgment.

  • If you know a Bronx school or local organization that would benefit from our programming, we want to hear from you. Bronx Eats partners with schools and community groups to deliver cooking demos and produce distributions tailored to their needs. Contact us to start the conversation.

  • The best way to stay connected is to join our mailing list. You’ll receive updates on upcoming public events, program announcements, and opportunities to get involved.
